Fingerprint Mother's Day Card

This mother's day is all about fingerprints and hand-prints of the precious wee ones. This is a simple card that you can make with minimal child participation for the wee ones, or with lots more from the older children in your life. This particular one was made by me, (a mother), for my mother-in-law, which we affectionately refer to as "Da Momma". The steps below can be done by you or the child working with you - you can gauge what their abilities will allow them to do, and what you will have to help with.

Step 1: take a large piece of construction paper (I used ledger sized because I have bigger fingerprints), and fold it in half "like a hamburger" (width-wise as opposed to lengthwise).

Step 2: starting at the fold, draw half of a heart.

Step 3: keeping the paper folded, cut on the line. (You will be left with a full heart when the paper is unfolded.

Step 4: Write a greeting on the front of the card, eg. Happy Mother's Day!

Step 5: Open the heart, and designate one half for the writing and the other side for the art.

Step 6: Use a marker or green paint to make a curved line (this will be the stem of a flower).

Step 7: Use your favourite colour of paint to paint the pad of the child's thumb. Press the thumb around the tip of the "stem", so that the thumbprints become the petals of the flower.

Step 8: while it dries, you can write your message on the other side.

Note: feel free to use the thumbprints to add embellishments to the card. My mother-in-law happens to adore owls, so I used extra thumbprints to create an owl flying over the flowers.
